Celebrating because for some folks, like our LGBT seniors especially, this issue is dire. They don’t have time to wait for an overhaul of the healthcare system. Because let’s face it, that’s not happening any time soon. The fact is that marriage provides certain benefits and securities and those things should be available to all couples. It would be a lovely, flowery, perfect utopia if said benefits were open to all people regardless of marital or relationship status but that is not the case nor do I think it will be in the near future. I am no fan of the institution of marriage but it’s shitty to imply that queer couples who want to get married and thus are celebrating today are less radical.
/\Damn good points, actually, thank you. It’ll also hopefully make queer couples who have immigration issues have an easier time.
Now that this fight is done with (hopefully!), can we focus on issues that effect everyone, not just couples (like healthcare and homelessness and I’m sure things that don’t readily come to my mind).
Eta: Political arguments aside, part of this is I don’t quite “get” marriage. My parents weren’t married, most of the people I knew weren’t married, and while that was all in a heterosexual context, I grew up queer and between those two things it just never seemed important.
